How Your Phone’s Blue Light Could Be Aging Your Skin and Eyes

How much time do you get exposed to screens?

According to a study done by the University of Oregon, USA, prolonged exposure to blue light, emitted by cellphone and computer screens, may affect longevity.

The study was done on fruit flies. The ones who were exposed to blue light had their lives significantly reduced, compared to those who weren’t.

The cause of this may be the stress triggered on genes as an answer to the exposure to blue light.

When our vision ages by natural means, it is caused by the wear of the eye muscles, which lose their tone and contracts the crystallin, a structure responsible for vision.

Eletronic devices, when used for long periods of time, accelerate this deterioration.

Besides that, some damages were observed to the retina cells, on neurons, and locomotion skills.

Even flies that, because of a mutation, hadn’t developed eyes showed the side-effects in brain and mobility, suggesting that blue light doesn’t need to reach the eyes to be dangerous to the health. Scary, isn’t it?

However, the researchers said that it is still necessary to make new studies to see if what was found on flies can also happen to us, human beings.

Anyways, and meanwhile, there are some things we can do to minimize these harms. Do you want to know how?

To avoid the premature aging of your sight, it is recommended using some eye drops and amber-tinted eyeglasses, especially at night or in places with low light.

On some cellphones and computers, it is possible to fix the settings of blue light emission. Did you know that?

Besides, it is recommended looking at the horizon for a few minutes, to relax the eye muscles.

Many phones already have an automatic setting for blue light filters, but you can also download apps for this.
